Chapter 7

The next morning I called my mother and asked if it was all right if Hunter spent the day with her. I told my mother that Simon and I wanted to spend some time together, which couldn’t be further from the truth. A little white lie wouldn’t hurt. Of course it was all right with my mother, no matter the reason.

I turned on the kitchen radio and made myself some breakfast of poached eggs and dry toast. It wasn’t much, but it was all my belly could handle that morning. It seemed that my pregnancy with Courtney this time was harder on me than I remembered it being in the past. Maybe I had just forgotten. It had been a lot of years since I was last pregnant.

As I sat down and poured some orange juice in a glass, I heard Simon stirring on the couch. I couldn’t help but smile as he retched and sprinted to the bathroom. Even the sound of vomiting coming from down the hall didn’t ruin my breakfast. “Serves you right,” I said out loud, knowing he couldn’t hear me.

“Get me some aspirin,” Simon ordered. He shuffled to the kitchen and sat down at the table.

“A ‘please’ would be nice,” I said.

Simon glared at me through glassy eyes. “And some coffee,” he added.

I got up anyway and got the aspirin and a glass of water and set both of them down in front of him. He never did say please or thank you.

“Stay tuned for the news, after this short commercial break,” I heard from the radio as I poured Simon some coffee and sat down across from him to finish my breakfast.

Simon drank the black coffee greedily. His eyes were squinty and bloodshot. He was in no mood for conversation that morning, after all the beer from the night before. We sat in silence

When I finished, I got up, picked up my plate and headed to the kitchen sink.

“Last night a 22 year old man was found beaten to death on Lake Street, in front of the pharmacy. His name is being withheld pending notification to the family. Witnesses said a man and woman were seen fleeing from the scene.”

I stopped in my tracks and turned to look at Simon. He had heard it too and was suddenly much more alert than he had been a minute ago. He looked me straight in the eyes, but still said nothing.

“If anyone has any information on the perpetrators, please call the Red Lake Sheriff’s Department. Stay tuned for the Dr. Stephen show coming up next.”

I reached over and turned the radio dial to the off position.

“Oh my god, Simon, what do we do now?” I sat down across from my husband and finished off my orange juice.

“Nothing. That’s exactly what we’re going to do. We had nothing to do with that. Got it?” He watched me for a reaction.

I nervously fidgeted with my long red hair. “Simon, you killed that man. We can’t just ignore that.
